Measuring wheel sets
Excellence in instrumented wheelsets - PJM combines measurement technology, experience as an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited test center and specialist engineering knowledge.
PJM's measuring wheelset expertise includes engineering, tests on the static and mobile test rig and the performance and supervision of dynamic track tests. For the development and production of the measuring wheelsets, a dedicated hall with state-of-the-art infrastructure has been equipped at the company's site in Graz.
A strong partner in the field of instrumented wheelsets:
- All processes and project steps relating to instrumented wheelsets are handled by PJM in-house and from a single source
- This also results in short throughput times
- Calculation, design, production, calibration and balancing
- Powerful telemetry system: Thanks to the extensive equipment, 12 measuring wheelsets can be operated simultaneously
- PJM offers solutions for every application and every wheel geometry (not just standard solutions)

PJM measuring wheel sets are used for a wide range of applications:
- Internally and externally mounted wheelsets
- All common track gauges and rail profiles
- All common wheel shapes and wheel diameter
- All common speed ranges
The following areas of application are covered:
- Technical approval of rail vehicles (e.g. EN 14363, AAR, 49 CFR)
- Monitoring of the superstructure
- Determining operating loads
An instrumented wheel set consists of three assemblies:
- Strain gauges (DMS), which are mounted on the wheel disk
- Telemetry unit: The data is transmitted via telemetry
- Evaluation unit, which includes the calculation algorithm and visualization
The advantages PJM‘s instrumented wheelsets are obvious:
- High flexibility, as the instrumented wheelsets can be used with all wheelset designs
- Signal synchronization
- Automated, dynamic calibration
- Realistic test drive on the test bench for quality assurance as an end-of-line test
