PJ Messtechnik

The specialist for measurement technology and engineering in rail transportation

Fields of excellence

PJ Messtechnik is an accredited testing laboratory in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065 and a specialist in engineering for rail transportation - two complementary areas of expertise that together ensure reliable and well thought-out solutions.

Your reliable partner for measurement technology in rail transportation

For almost two decades, we have stood for precise and reliable measurement technology in rail transportation. Our many years of specialization have enabled us to build up and continuously develop in-depth expertise. PJ Messtechnik was the first privately accredited testing laboratory in Austria to be recognized by the Federal Ministry just two years after it was founded - proof of the high quality standards we have pursued from the very beginning.

Today, PJM is an accredited test center for six test areas: Driving technology, strength, brakes, acoustics, aerodynamics and pantograph - in the latter area we are even the only test center in Austria.

Technology from space travel - rethought for rail freight transport

This expertise is complemented by our second major competence: engineering, in which PJ Messtechnik has done truly pioneering work: For the first time, we have successfully transferred topology optimization, which originally came from the aerospace industry, to freight wagons. The aim here is to develop components with the lowest possible weight and at the same time maximum structural safety - a combination that is particularly in demand in rail transport.

PJM is also one of the internationally recognized specialists in the field of multi-body simulation and finite element calculation. With sound methodological expertise and modern simulation technology, we support the development of safe, efficient and sustainable vehicles.

History

From spin-off to a company operating all over the world

In 2006, PJM was founded as a spin-off of the Technical University of Graz. Only two years later, PJM received the accreditation as testing facility (approved by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs and by the German EBA). International customers trust in the know-how and competence of the co-founders Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig. First customers were well-known companies such as London Underground, Toronto Cable Car, Doppelmayr, Westbahn ÖBB or SBB. Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig put a strong focus on R&D. Thus, PJM has developed cutting-edge technology and pioneering systems such the internationally patented WaggonTracker, instrumented wheel set and many more.

Due to the consistent growth of the companies, the two founders now focus on one company each. Martin Joch is CEO of PJ Messtechnik GmbH (accredited test center according to ISO/IEC 17065 and engineering) and Günter Petschnig is CEO of PJ Monitoring GmbH (digital freight transport).

Management

Martin Joch, PhD
Managing Director of PJ Messtechnik GmbH

Focus: Measuring and test technique, engineering, corporate development, human resources and project development.

Martin Joch is the one who knows all the facts and figures of railway business and who will always find a solution for any kind of technical challenge. For 20 years, he has been dealing with the overall system of rail traffic.

Martin Joch’s studies at the University of Technology in Graz included mechanical engineering and economics. During his subsequent eight-year assignment as university assistant, his key issues comprised mechanical engineering, design and metrology. Among other things, he initiated the ‘working group metrology’. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and patent specifications. In 2006, Martin Joch and and Günter Petschnig founded PJ Messtechnik.

PJM Crew

All the disciplines and all countries of the world

The interdiscplinary teams work all over the world and under all kind of demanding conditions, as in the underground (in the case of underground railways), in hot regions (e.g. in Australia) and during the cold season. It’s always our crew who gets projects on the track and complete them successfully.

Many years of experience, in-depth expertise as well as a hands-on approach are the assets of our team. Our customers appreciate the wealth of experience, reliability and commitment. Leading institutions such as VDV (Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen), CEN (Europäisches Komitee für Normung and ASI (Austrian Standards International) rely on our expertise and the reports of our official experts.

The PJM team is a melting pot of talents, personalities and specialists. With a large portion of humour. And an irrepressible will to make a good job. However many obstacles we have to overcome to complete a project.

Trends

Tomorrow’s technology is on the track today

We are not capable of scrying or seeing the future. But we have a large knowledge on the international railway systems:

  • Austria is the world's 4th largest export country in the rail industry
  • The rail industry has created 28,000 jobs and EUR 2.7 billion in total value added in Austria
    - EUR 14.4 billion was generated in the German rail industry in 2023
(source: VDB annual press conference 20.03.2024)
  • The external costs of truck traffic are 3x higher than rail transport
    (source: VCÖ, https://vcoe.at/publikationen/magazin/detail/gueterverkehr?page_n168=5)
  • 1 freight train replaces 40 trucks and rail is 17 times more climate-friendly than road transport: A truck semitrailer consumes 69 grams of CO2, a freight train only 4 grams
    (source: VCÖ, https://vcoe.at/publikationen/magazin/detail/gueterverkehr?page_n168=5)
  • Compared to a truck, a freight train consumes 80% less CO2 emissions (figures taken from VDV).
  • Transporting hazardous goods by rail is over 40 times safer than by road.
  • In 2050, 19,000 trillion tonne-kilometres will be transported by rail worldwide. By comparison: in 2010 it was 4,300 trillion
  • The global rail market has exceeded the 200 billion euro mark and will continue to grow
(study “Worldwide Market for Railway Industries 2024” by SCI/Transport: https://www.sci.de/shop/search/product/?productid=273bbe36-7597-47a5-abde-7c1c865b2cae&L=1)
