DB Cargo pilot train with automated brake testing has started parallel operation at MEG

Automated brake testing is also picking up speed in Germany. A pilot train with the automated brake testing system has been put into parallel operation by DB Cargo at Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH (MEG). The technology has been developed by PJM and has been regarded as the European reference system since the positive evaluation by TÜV. The automated brake test meets all technical and formal criteria as well as safety-relevant specifications. The next step of the approved system is the roll-out. The brake test system is also designed for further automation steps. Thanks to the energy-autonomous and efficient power supply and local radio system, the system is now available and can be used flexibly for retrofit and new vehicles. The modular design ensures compatibility with future DAC. Depending on the operating grade, the brake test will be carried out automatically 4 - 6 times a day or around 1,800 times a year.

The automated brake test is an important component in making rail freight transport more efficient, faster and more attractive. The automated system creates efficiency: the time saved for a 400-meter freight train is around 2 x 35 minutes and the process can be carried out by the locomotive driver or wagon master alone. This is a major advantage from the perspective of the future labour market. The shortage of skilled workers and shunting personnel will increase in the coming years due to demographic developments. "It's high time to replace outdated work and tedious manual tasks with automated processes. Automation brings the urgently needed efficiency boost as well as increasing the profitability of rail transport. And it creates attractive job profiles," says Günter Petschnig, CEO of PJM.

Export Award 2022: Gold for PJM

Export Award 2022 goes to PJM: The digitization platform WaggonTracker with the application of automatic brake testing convinced the jury of experts

The most successful exporters are brought to the stage every year. The export award, which honors innovation, market potential and export quota, among other things, was presented on June 27th. PJM was awarded gold in the Information & Consulting category. The deciding factor was the overall digital system WaggonTracker, which makes automated rail transport a reality. This includes automated brake testing for freight trains. The automated system is the first in Europe to be fully developed and to receive a positive review. "The challenge was to automate a safety-relevant process. We saw the realization of our brake test system through to the last required document. The reward for our many years of development work is the successful market entry," says CEO Martin Joch.
The 2022 Export Award was presented in five categories at a ceremony in Vienna's Museumsquartier. Despite the global lockdowns and restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic, many Austrian companies were also successful in exporting their goods and services internationally in the previous year. "These companies are drivers of growth, jobs and prosperity in Austria. Every second job in Austria depends directly or indirectly on the export success of these companies. Every year, the Export Award honors companies for their special export achievements," emphasizes WKÖ President Harald Mahrer.
"Austrian companies are role models and pioneers - especially in the field of environmental technology. They are innovative and in many cases also world market leaders in their field," Kühnel emphasized the special achievements of domestic companies.
"Our winners this year demonstrate how digitalization is being used as a means of shaping a sustainable future. This innovative strength of Austrian companies is increasingly being recognized on the global market," said deputy chairman of the federal division Martin Heimhilcher, congratulating the winners.

Growing expertise: Welcome to three new colleagues!

We are very happe to welcome 3 news colleagues Paul, Marcel and Michael in our measurement technology team! Two new colleagues have already gained insight into our measurement technology & data analysis area in the last few weeks. The third new colleague started in mid-May. The railway industry offers so many interesting specialist areas and future-proof "climate-friendly" jobs - we are pleased that young technicians are finding interest in it.

PJM awarded the Austrian National Award for Engineering Consulting

PJM was awarded the Austrian National Award for Engineering Consulting 2021 on May, 11th. The submitted project convinced the 13 experts of the expert jury chaired by DI Dr. Peter Holzer.

A new technical procedure was developed, which was applied among others for the Barcelona metro, with which the rails and tracks of city railways and underground trains can be measured smartly and digitally in a short time. For this, mobile measuring technology is used that is installed on an existing vehicle - instead of conventional measuring trains. These cannot be used for urban railways due to the smaller clearance gauge profiles. "The jury is unanimously convinced that the attractiveness of inner-city public transport can be increased with this technology, because the availability, safety and comfort of passengers is significantly increased", states the jury.

"What a great award! The expert jury looked at our solution in detail and asked well-founded questions. The State Prize is a wonderful confirmation of our daily striving for reliable solutions and innovative concepts. A big thank you also to our client voestalpine Tracking Solutions Germany GmbH," says Martin Joch, CEO of PJM.

About the State Prize

The State Prize for Consulting has been awarded by the Ministry of Economics since 1990, since 2010 alternately for "Engineering Consulting" (organiser: Austrian Consultants Association - ACA) and for "Management Consulting and Information Technology".

Sales cooperation of Voith and PJM: Product portfolios expanded by WaggonTracker and CargoFlex

The worldwide operating technology group Voith, headquartered in Heidenheim, and the Austrian systems specialist for rail transport PJM are bundling their expertise in rail freight transport and becoming sales partners. With immediate effect, the digital WaggonTracker platform will complement the Voith Group's product portfolio and sales network. The two companies are thus expanding their development cooperation in the field of digitized logistics management, announced in the fall of 2021, to include a sales partnership. "PJM's solution is since a decade and with multiple thousands of installations the technical benchmark at the market, Voith is thus very happy to have such a product in our sales portfolio", Matheus Habets, Vice President Product Management Digitalization Mobility. "Innovation and automation drive rail freight forward, which is urgently needed for climate policy. We are proud to have Voith as an innovative partner with profound industry knowledge and a global sales and service network", Günter Petschnig, CEO of PJM.

The WaggonTracker system is a globally unique digital overall system that combines monitoring and automation. Among other things, the system is the basis of automated brake testing, which is an essential element in the modernization of rail freight transport. PJM's automated brake testing system was recently positively evaluated as the first reference system in Europe and is already undergoing extensive operational trials. Voith is one of the leading manufacturers of coupler systems. The CargoFlex automatic freight coupler, which has been successfully used on hundreds of freight wagons for years, is just one of numerous innovations. The proven innovations WaggonTracker and CargoFlex complement each other ideally as an overall system solution for digital and automated freight transport. The automatic freight coupling leads to a higher competitiveness of rail freight transport, due to, among other things, faster shunting processes and train formation, increased work safety, shorter transport times and a higher driving speed.
