Excellent technology: German Innovation Award 2020 goes to PJM

The digital overall system WaggonTracker was awarded the renowned German Innovation Award 2020. The international well-known honour is awarded by the German Design Council. The WaggonTracker-system was nominated in autumn 2019, among more than 700 submissios. The jury of experts appreciated the digital technology: PJM is "German Innovation Award 2020 Winner”.

PJM has developed a one of a kind overall system, providing both crucial information on the rail transport in real-time and automated processes. "Innovations are aiming at optimisation. Innovations either solve a problem or improve things. That’s what we were heading for: Catapulting the 100-year-old processes of rail transport into the 21st century and to make it more attractive and efficient”, say Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig, founders and CEO of PJM. The highly innovative WaggonTracker-system fully meets all those requirements. Thus, customers benefit from cost-savings and much more efficient processes. "The developing process from the first idea up to the serial production was very intensive. The German Innovation Award 2020 Winner is dedicated to the entire team. We highly appreciate the award!“

S-Bahn Berlin: PJM finished approval tests of new suburbal trainset

The suburban fleet of S-Bahn in Berlin will be modernised from 2021 on. 382 new vehicles will provide more comfort, light and safety. 2015, the consortium Siemens Mobility GmbH and Stadler Pankow GmbH started to develop a new trainset "DB 483 and 484". For these new trainsets, PJM was in charge of the approval tests in the fields of fatigue strength, structural requirements of railway vehicle bodies and torsional vibrations of the wheelsets. A complex projekt like this reqires a many years' experience of worldwide projects of an accredited testing facility.

These figures show the complexity of this project:

  • Periods of test runs: 10 weeks
  • Generated data from the test runs: 2 terabytes
  • 30 telemetry channels and 400 measurement channels

Impact tests for innofreight wagons

The Austrian company innofreight is specialised on innovative haulage and logistic systems. Recently, PJM performed comprehensive impact tests for the new wagon type "Innowaggon". With various loads and by changing speed levels, the vehicle design is tested to meet the requirements for shunting operations. innofreight has provided a video on the testing procedure.

Lenzing AG: LoadMonitor upgrade of further 106 wagons

Lenzing AG, a global player based in Austria, decided to upgrade further 106 wagons with an automated load monitoring system provided by the WaggonTracker-platform. Its benefits are manifold: The load is monitored during the loading process and thus ensures an optimum load capacity. This results in cost-savings and an increase of efficiency and safety by preventing overload.

Let's have a great 2020!

2019 was both exiting and succesful! Our teams realised projects on four continents. Our measurement experts performed tests for passenger trains, special vehicles and rail freight trains. In terms of digitalisation of rail freight transport, PJM keeps innovations leading: More than 2.300 WaggonTracker-systems have been in operation so far (By the way: In Septemer, the WaggonTracker-plattform was awarded the innovation prize FFA).

2019 was a big success for us. However, we have great plans for next year, too. We have started to work on many things so that we can keep informing you on innvations and novelties. What do we work on? Just some little hints: We always work to improve "the railway system" and hence provide concrete customer's benefits. Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig use to say: "We do know exactly the needs of vehicle manufacturers, railway companies, fleet operators and wagon keepers. We have the know-how and the technologies to provide cutting-edge advantages." We are looking forward to 2020!

2.000 intelligent rail freight cars running with WaggonTracker systems

PJM has pioneered the digital rail freight transport. Crucial information in real-time on rail freight wagons and automated processes result in higher efficiency, time-saving and cost-savings. Hence, the rail freight cargo gets more attractive. The technology behind this is the patented WaggonTracker-system.

International customers like SBB Cargo and Mercitalia appreciate the benefits of this overall digital system. Austrian customers such as Lenzing AG count on intelligent freight cars, too. More than 2.000 WaggonTracker-systems have been installed worldwide.

More information on the WaggonTracker-system is provided here

Panel on automated rail freight transport

The panel discussion on "Alliance of SBB Cargo with  the industry and public authorities to automatise rail freight transport in Switzerland" took place at the TransportLogistic in Munich. Martin Joch, founder and CEO of PJM, joined the expert panel. "New technologies have a strong impact on our society. We are surrounded by intelligent systems such as Alexa, Amazon, Google & Co. Rail fraight transport needs to be contemporary, too - providing benefits for all of us. Quality of transport and saving of time are the bullet points. Furthermore  it's about creating attractive jobs. Digitalisation will provide new, interesting jobs."

Anja-Maria Sonntag, project leader automation of SBB Cargo provided insight on automisation projects and on the auotmated brake test.

Christian Radewagen, project manager of Voith, emphasised the envorinmental and competitive aspects of rail freight industry.

Arnold Berndt of the public authority "Bundesamt für Verkehr", pointed out the importance of modern rail freight transport systems.

Mercitalia Rail: Intelligent freight wagons are ready to go

Mercitalia upgraded 240 Shimmns Coil Transport Wagons with the monitoring system WaggonTracker ADV

The multi-functional system provides comprehensive information in a very clear and well-arranged way:

  • Weighting analysis including a precise load analysis (e.g. asymmetric load). The staff gets all the required information on the ground. Thus it is possible to correct the loads if necessary.
  • Monitoring of any impacts during standstill
  • Running-gear monitoring on the ride

PJM installed the intelligent monitoring system on the wagons of the latest generation ex works. 200 wagons are ready to go for Mercitalia, another 40 will be delivered in March.

Rail Cargo Innovations

PJM on the 9th VPI Symposium in Hamburg in January 2019

On the VDI’s first meeting of the year, the automation of rail freight transport and telematics were in the limelight. Our CEOs Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig presented the patent-registered WaggonTracker which perfectly combines automation and digitalisation. This system has been an established and proven technology for more than one year. The best practise of automated brake test for SBB Cargo clearly shows the efficiency and advantages in contrast to conventional, manual brake tests.

About 300 members and guests discussed new issues and developments. VPI is going to break new grounds by founding VPI European Rail Service GmbH (VERS). Further information on: https://www.vpihamburg.de/news/pm-symposium-2019
