Nomination for the State Prize for Digitalisation

The most innovative digital projects and products were sought, evaluated and selected by a top-class jury according to a wide range of criteria. The submission phase took place together with the FFG (Austrian Research Promotion Agency). We are delighted that our project "Digital Rail Transport: Automatic Brake Test via Tablet" has been nominated. The decision on the State Prize Digitalisation 2023 will be made at the JOYN ORF 4GAMECHANGERS Festival 2024.

The sensation in rail freight automation: BAV’s type approval for automatic brake testing

Now it's official: the automated brake testing system has been granted type approval by the Swiss “Federal Office of Transport” (Schweizer Bundesamt für Verkehr). Hence, the automated brake taste is the first approved system worldwide and the first far-reaching automated application in European rail transport. The system was developed with SBB Cargo and is a functionally safe application that has been trialled in various phases over several years. The project milestones in brief:

  • 2017: First test trains
  • 01/ 2022: Pilot train
  • 03/2022: Positive review by TÜV Süd
  • 11/2023: Operational approval by BAV

The automated application provides many benefits:

- Enormous time saving: for a 500 m long goods train, the time saved is around 75 minutes (35 minutes each for 2 shunters)

- Faster, more reliable and safer: the brake check can be carried out automatically by the train driver, is more reliable and increases safety (thanks to the consistent quality of the brake check and the system's objective evaluation criteria).

- Freight wagon downtimes are significantly reduced, while terminal turnaround times are increased.

- The implementation of an automatic brake test brings a concrete and - this is particularly important - immediate improvement for the railway companies.

- For the shunting staff and those responsible for brake testing, the automatic brake test means an improvement in the workplace situation. The interactive operation of a clearly displayed system replaces the strenuous, physically demanding manual inspection.

- The brake test is an essential part of the "1-person operation" that is gradually being implemented by railway companies such as SBB Cargo, particularly as a measure to manage the shortage of skilled labour resulting from demographic development.

Günter Petschnig, CEO of PJ Monitoring, looks back on several years of development: "It's a long way from the vision to the innovation of a completely new system. A major project of this size can only be successfully realised if the project partners work together step by step over several years. The teams at SBB Cargo and PJM have done a fantastic job. A big thank you to the stamina and commitment of everyone involved!"

Sales cooperation of Voith and PJM: Product portfolios expanded by WaggonTracker and CargoFlex

The worldwide operating technology group Voith, headquartered in Heidenheim, and the Austrian systems specialist for rail transport PJM are bundling their expertise in rail freight transport and becoming sales partners. With immediate effect, the digital WaggonTracker platform will complement the Voith Group's product portfolio and sales network. The two companies are thus expanding their development cooperation in the field of digitized logistics management, announced in the fall of 2021, to include a sales partnership. "PJM's solution is since a decade and with multiple thousands of installations the technical benchmark at the market, Voith is thus very happy to have such a product in our sales portfolio", Matheus Habets, Vice President Product Management Digitalization Mobility. "Innovation and automation drive rail freight forward, which is urgently needed for climate policy. We are proud to have Voith as an innovative partner with profound industry knowledge and a global sales and service network", Günter Petschnig, CEO of PJM.

The WaggonTracker system is a globally unique digital overall system that combines monitoring and automation. Among other things, the system is the basis of automated brake testing, which is an essential element in the modernization of rail freight transport. PJM's automated brake testing system was recently positively evaluated as the first reference system in Europe and is already undergoing extensive operational trials. Voith is one of the leading manufacturers of coupler systems. The CargoFlex automatic freight coupler, which has been successfully used on hundreds of freight wagons for years, is just one of numerous innovations. The proven innovations WaggonTracker and CargoFlex complement each other ideally as an overall system solution for digital and automated freight transport. The automatic freight coupling leads to a higher competitiveness of rail freight transport, due to, among other things, faster shunting processes and train formation, increased work safety, shorter transport times and a higher driving speed.

The Mobility Award is Austria’s largest competition for climate compatibility and sustainable goods traffic. The winner will be awarded in September 2020.

The benefits of the WaggonTracker-system are clear: One digital overall system provides a wide range of functionalities and it combines monitoring and automation. Hence, digital railway transport is becoming safer, faster and much more efficient. All in all: It is more attractive. These attributes are significant to shift transport from road to railway. Furthermore, railway transport is eco-friendly and cheaper.

Excellent technology: German Innovation Award 2020 goes to PJM

The digital overall system WaggonTracker was awarded the renowned German Innovation Award 2020. The international well-known honour is awarded by the German Design Council. The WaggonTracker-system was nominated in autumn 2019, among more than 700 submissios. The jury of experts appreciated the digital technology: PJM is "German Innovation Award 2020 Winner”.

PJM has developed a one of a kind overall system, providing both crucial information on the rail transport in real-time and automated processes. "Innovations are aiming at optimisation. Innovations either solve a problem or improve things. That’s what we were heading for: Catapulting the 100-year-old processes of rail transport into the 21st century and to make it more attractive and efficient”, say Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig, founders and CEO of PJM. The highly innovative WaggonTracker-system fully meets all those requirements. Thus, customers benefit from cost-savings and much more efficient processes. "The developing process from the first idea up to the serial production was very intensive. The German Innovation Award 2020 Winner is dedicated to the entire team. We highly appreciate the award!“
