FutureConvent: Measurement technology for young enthusiasts

What is the FutureConvent about? Companies show young people attending a technical college what sustainable topics they are working on. Higher technical colleges combine specialised technical training with a school-leaving certificate. The conference programme was rounded off with lectures and workshops. The young people were given an insight into the technologies of today and the future.

PJM was at the FutureConvent for the first time and presented smart rail monitoring using laser technology. The students were also able to flex their muscles: The force transducer was used to measure arm strength.

Millimetre work: measuring application for a turbine impeller

Accuracy is a prerequisite of measurement technology. Precision work is required to obtain reliable and exact measurement results. Our laboratory team is highly experienced in millimetre work. This was also the case with a measurement application for a turbine impeller. Ten strain gauge measuring channels were applied to the special aluminium-bronze surface, and calibration was also carried out in-house. Another requirement of the customer, a global supplier of electromechanical systems and services for hydropower plants, was to make the entire measuring application waterproof.

PJM's measurement know-how is not only in demand in the railway industry. Time and again, PJM also carries out measurements of stresses and loads on special machines, such as for metal shredders from UNTHA.

Approval tests in Ireland for Geismar Italia S.p.A

Two types of track inspection vehicles will be in operation on the Irish rail network in the future. For the approval tests, the world-renowned manufacturer of track construction machines relied on PJM's expertise. The approval tests took place in Ireland - typical Irish weather included.

PJM awarded the Austrian National Award for Engineering Consulting

PJM was awarded the Austrian National Award for Engineering Consulting 2021 on May, 11th. The submitted project convinced the 13 experts of the expert jury chaired by DI Dr. Peter Holzer.

A new technical procedure was developed, which was applied among others for the Barcelona metro, with which the rails and tracks of city railways and underground trains can be measured smartly and digitally in a short time. For this, mobile measuring technology is used that is installed on an existing vehicle - instead of conventional measuring trains. These cannot be used for urban railways due to the smaller clearance gauge profiles. "The jury is unanimously convinced that the attractiveness of inner-city public transport can be increased with this technology, because the availability, safety and comfort of passengers is significantly increased", states the jury.

"What a great award! The expert jury looked at our solution in detail and asked well-founded questions. The State Prize is a wonderful confirmation of our daily striving for reliable solutions and innovative concepts. A big thank you also to our client voestalpine Tracking Solutions Germany GmbH," says Martin Joch, CEO of PJM.

About the State Prize

The State Prize for Consulting has been awarded by the Ministry of Economics since 1990, since 2010 alternately for "Engineering Consulting" (organiser: Austrian Consultants Association - ACA) and for "Management Consulting and Information Technology".

Measuring turnouts for voestalpine Railway Systems

In its business segments, voestalpine is a globally leading steel and technology group with a unique combination of materials and processing expertise. voestalpine Railway Systems, a subsidiary company of voestalpine AG with approximately 7.000 employees, is the global leader for railway infrastructure system solutions, offering outstanding products, logistics and services for rails, turnouts, signaling and monitoring applications.

In the current project, PJM has performed measurements at the turnouts in Vienna Liesing. The track next to the regional transport hub in the south of Vienna is heavily frequented since train run every 5-10 minutes. By using our measurement data, we determine the stress on the turnouts over a period of two years. Therefore, our team had installed the measurement technology in November 2020. The measurements are performed fully automated. The data will be transmitted to the PJM servers via mobile network. Parallel to this, data analysis will run over the next 24 months.

S-Bahn Berlin: PJM finished approval tests of new suburbal trainset

The suburban fleet of S-Bahn in Berlin will be modernised from 2021 on. 382 new vehicles will provide more comfort, light and safety. 2015, the consortium Siemens Mobility GmbH and Stadler Pankow GmbH started to develop a new trainset "DB 483 and 484". For these new trainsets, PJM was in charge of the approval tests in the fields of fatigue strength, structural requirements of railway vehicle bodies and torsional vibrations of the wheelsets. A complex projekt like this reqires a many years' experience of worldwide projects of an accredited testing facility.

These figures show the complexity of this project:

  • Periods of test runs: 10 weeks
  • Generated data from the test runs: 2 terabytes
  • 30 telemetry channels and 400 measurement channels

Engineering expertise for developing new rail freight wagons

Developing new types of rail freight wagons requires a high level of engineering know-how. The basic concept of a rail freight wagon is maximum load capacity as well as a low tare weight with a maximumg safety level. Exactly these requirements are in the focus in developing a new 60ft rail freight car ordered by innofreight, the Austrian specialist for innovative systems of rail freight transport. Due to our highly experienced engineering team, PJM was the first choice: Our profound metrological know-how ensured a perfect link-up to the ral product during the whole delelopment process.
