Optimised design for Stadler Rail AG

In the development of rail vehicles, a key factor is: as little material and weight as necessary, but as much load-bearing capacity as possible. Topology optimisation has been part of our everyday engineering work for years. Among others, Stadler Rail AG relies on our calculation know-how. In a current project, our engineering team is dealing with structural optimisation and strength verification of the wagon bodies of a local transport vehicle.

We think out of the box

We have a particularly effective and efficient engineering team, as experienced experts in design, calculation, simulation and certification work very closely together. Expanded by measurement technology specialists, we offer unique know-how in the product development of structural railway components. Our innovative strength is further enhanced by our distinctive out-of-the-box thinking: All engineering staff have many years of experience in the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors in addition to their railway activities. Therefore, we are not only engineering experts in rail transport, but also in projects in other sectors, such as the optimization of waste treatment plants or other mechanical engineering projects.

Best calculations for the future

With our concentrated knowledge in calculation, simulation and measurement, as an accredited testing laboratory we are well prepared when calculations and simulations are increasingly used for the approval of railway vehicles in the future. For all this, FprCEN/TS 17833:2022 comes into play, the "Guideline for the use of simulations to demonstrate compliance with technical and regulatory requirements".

We seamlessly dovetail our profound experience from worldwide test drives and approval trials with our engineering know-how. We link our empirical values from track tests with our design knowledge and thus create great added value for our customers.

Nightjets of ÖBB: Measuring wheel sets and approval tests

In future, a total of 33 Nightjets of the new Viaggio Next Level generation from Siemens Mobility will ensure comfortable and at the same time climate-friendly travel in Central Europe. For the approval of the newly developed passenger coaches, PJM is on board as an accredited test center according to ISO/IEC 17025. The Austrian system specialist was commissioned for the overall approval in cooperation with ÖBB. The contract specifically includes the instrumented wheel sets as well as the approval tests in the areas of running behavior, fatigue strength, acoustics and aerodynamics.

6 instrumented wheel sets were developed and manufactured in Graz and then installed in the test vehicle at the ÖBB plant in Vienna. The test runs started in autumn 2021. The test train is in use throughout the entire Austrian rail network. To evaluate derailment safety, the first approval tests started in the field of running behavior, after which the bogies were upgraded for the test runs in the area fatigue strength. Finally, high-speed measurements follow for the aerodynamics area. The acoustic tests will complete the approval tests. "For an extensive project like this, it is above all our metrology expertise and experience in bringing together all specialist areas that prove their worth. Our flexibility and routine, which we have gained from our numerous international projects, are also essential. Due to the weather, there are always changes in procedures, for example during test runs in winter on the Arlberg at 1,000 m above sea level," explains Martin Joch, CEO of PJM. "A good collaboration with the project partners is also immensely important in large-scale projects. The cooperation with ÖBB's measurement group is excellent."

DB Cargo pilot train with automated brake testing has started parallel operation at MEG

Automated brake testing is also picking up speed in Germany. A pilot train with the automated brake testing system has been put into parallel operation by DB Cargo at Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH (MEG). The technology has been developed by PJM and has been regarded as the European reference system since the positive evaluation by TÜV. The automated brake test meets all technical and formal criteria as well as safety-relevant specifications. The next step of the approved system is the roll-out. The brake test system is also designed for further automation steps. Thanks to the energy-autonomous and efficient power supply and local radio system, the system is now available and can be used flexibly for retrofit and new vehicles. The modular design ensures compatibility with future DAC. Depending on the operating grade, the brake test will be carried out automatically 4 - 6 times a day or around 1,800 times a year.

The automated brake test is an important component in making rail freight transport more efficient, faster and more attractive. The automated system creates efficiency: the time saved for a 400-meter freight train is around 2 x 35 minutes and the process can be carried out by the locomotive driver or wagon master alone. This is a major advantage from the perspective of the future labour market. The shortage of skilled workers and shunting personnel will increase in the coming years due to demographic developments. "It's high time to replace outdated work and tedious manual tasks with automated processes. Automation brings the urgently needed efficiency boost as well as increasing the profitability of rail transport. And it creates attractive job profiles," says Günter Petschnig, CEO of PJM.

Export Award 2022: Gold for PJM

Export Award 2022 goes to PJM: The digitization platform WaggonTracker with the application of automatic brake testing convinced the jury of experts

The most successful exporters are brought to the stage every year. The export award, which honors innovation, market potential and export quota, among other things, was presented on June 27th. PJM was awarded gold in the Information & Consulting category. The deciding factor was the overall digital system WaggonTracker, which makes automated rail transport a reality. This includes automated brake testing for freight trains. The automated system is the first in Europe to be fully developed and to receive a positive review. "The challenge was to automate a safety-relevant process. We saw the realization of our brake test system through to the last required document. The reward for our many years of development work is the successful market entry," says CEO Martin Joch.
The 2022 Export Award was presented in five categories at a ceremony in Vienna's Museumsquartier. Despite the global lockdowns and restrictions caused by the Corona pandemic, many Austrian companies were also successful in exporting their goods and services internationally in the previous year. "These companies are drivers of growth, jobs and prosperity in Austria. Every second job in Austria depends directly or indirectly on the export success of these companies. Every year, the Export Award honors companies for their special export achievements," emphasizes WKÖ President Harald Mahrer.
"Austrian companies are role models and pioneers - especially in the field of environmental technology. They are innovative and in many cases also world market leaders in their field," Kühnel emphasized the special achievements of domestic companies.
"Our winners this year demonstrate how digitalization is being used as a means of shaping a sustainable future. This innovative strength of Austrian companies is increasingly being recognized on the global market," said deputy chairman of the federal division Martin Heimhilcher, congratulating the winners.

Static strength measurements in the factory enabled by a mobile pressure frame

The key data of Plasser & Theurer's 09-3X track tamping machine are impressive: 80 tonnes net weight, 35 m length, 8 axles, and 3-sleeper tamping units ensure powerful and efficient working. To determine the stresses and deformations of the vehicle frame, PJM carried out pressure frame tests according to EN 12663-1. The strength tests were performed at the Linz factory of the technology leader and manufacturer of track maintenance machines. This has clear advantages for the machine manufacturer: the entire on-site infrastructure is used and any adaptations to the object can be coordinated with the design engineers and immediately implemented. Using PJM’s mobile pressure frame allows the tests to be carried out directly in the factory.

Thanks to its modular design, the pressure frame is suitable for every type of vehicle. It has proven its effectiveness in static tests in numerous projects.

"Testing with the mobile pressure frame at the customer's site provides full transparency for the calculation engineers with regard to test procedure. It also greatly facilitates validating the calculation models. This approach ensures the least possible amount of time is spent in projects," explains Martin Joch, CEO of PJM. "PJM handled the measurements very efficiently and professionally. We greatly benefitted from the fact that they were carried out on our premises in Linz," confirms Andreas Pumberger, Head of Railway Testing Lab, Plasser & Theurer.
