Live in Berlin: We present novelties at the Railway Forum

The railway industry meets again "live" at the Berlin Railway Forum. Mobility know-how "Made in Styria" also will be presented at the first-class industry event. We are looking forward to your visit at the joint booth of AC Styria!

The major headlines of the industry meeting are, among others, the development of the railroad system, digitalization & automation as well as sustainability. We are the innovation leader in all of these topics: our digital overall system WaggonTracker, which makes SGV more attractive, better and faster, our technical solution of automated brake testing and our system for automated load monitoring. In measurement technology, too, we are constantly coming up with new solutions and technologies, such as our autonomous measurement system.

Completed: 500+ wagons of Mercer & TRANSWAGGON equipped with automated load monitoring system

The capacity has increased many times over. Another big benefit is that the loading staff sees at once if the wagon is overloaded”, says Lothar Krebs, Deputy Sales Director of TRANSWAGGON in Hamburg when he is talking about the automated load monitoring system of PJM. Recently, the last of 512 wagons in total was equipped with the automated system. The wagons are in use by Mercer Holz which is one of the largest purchasers in Europe. More than 3.5 million tons of logs, chips and lumber are transported by rail every year.

Wood can have weight differences of up to 50% due to differences in density and moisture content which is a big uncertainty factor in loading the wagons. “We need reliable, stable monitoring of the loading process to protect against overlading of the wagons”, explains Jürgen Köhler, Division Manager for Rail and Ship Logistics at Mercer Holz. The load monitoring system meets all these demands: The system analyses the load and the load distribution during the loading process. Signal lamp indicate as soon as the maximum load capacity is reached. Further benefits:  real-time, precise and reliable data transfer and lists of train composition are provided per app, scan, NFC or manual input. “Mercer Holz pushes efficiency exemplarily and its wagon capacity is very high”, says PJM CEO Günter Petschnig. “By increasing the system efficiency and its safety significantly, the automated load monitoring system ensures a quick ROI.”

Panel on automated rail freight transport

The panel discussion on "Alliance of SBB Cargo with  the industry and public authorities to automatise rail freight transport in Switzerland" took place at the TransportLogistic in Munich. Martin Joch, founder and CEO of PJM, joined the expert panel. "New technologies have a strong impact on our society. We are surrounded by intelligent systems such as Alexa, Amazon, Google & Co. Rail fraight transport needs to be contemporary, too - providing benefits for all of us. Quality of transport and saving of time are the bullet points. Furthermore  it's about creating attractive jobs. Digitalisation will provide new, interesting jobs."

Anja-Maria Sonntag, project leader automation of SBB Cargo provided insight on automisation projects and on the auotmated brake test.

Christian Radewagen, project manager of Voith, emphasised the envorinmental and competitive aspects of rail freight industry.

Arnold Berndt of the public authority "Bundesamt für Verkehr", pointed out the importance of modern rail freight transport systems.

Rail Cargo Innovations

PJM on the 9th VPI Symposium in Hamburg in January 2019

On the VDI’s first meeting of the year, the automation of rail freight transport and telematics were in the limelight. Our CEOs Martin Joch and Günter Petschnig presented the patent-registered WaggonTracker which perfectly combines automation and digitalisation. This system has been an established and proven technology for more than one year. The best practise of automated brake test for SBB Cargo clearly shows the efficiency and advantages in contrast to conventional, manual brake tests.

About 300 members and guests discussed new issues and developments. VPI is going to break new grounds by founding VPI European Rail Service GmbH (VERS). Further information on: https://www.vpihamburg.de/news/pm-symposium-2019

Communication of rail freight wagons

Mercitalia Rail joins the innovative project

Mercitalia Rail joined the cooperation with Rail Cargo Group and SBB Cargo in spring 2018. The partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the projects of automatic brake tests and direct communication from freight wagon to the staff.

The main aim of the Austrian, Swiss and Italian cargo partners is to develop a new communication standard and to implement various intelligent European user cases.

First pilot train in operation since August 2017

In May 2017, SBBC, RCG and PJM communicated to cooperate. Now, the first pilot train has been in operation since August 2017. The first train started in Switzerland, the Austrian train started in August 2018.
